Toward the beginning of my first tour with the Foreign Service, I wrote a post about the mindless exercise of counting up the different places I’ve been. Well, it turns out a girl can use a mindless exercise more than once. While I can’t announce any changes at all to my U.S. states visited map (maybe next time around), my countries-visited world map* certainly looks a whole lot different these days:
visited 38 states (16.8%)
Create your own visited map of The World
And here’s one that either they didn’t have before or I ignored previously because it didn’t interest me… India!
visited 10 states (28.5%)
Create your own visited map of India
As you can see – there’s still a lot to be explored. I have reason to be optimistic, though, that before the year is out I may be adding another continent to my list. You sure can’t say this job doesn’t give you the opportunity to go some amazing places (or at least put you somewhere where you can travel to amazing places more easily)…
*Some close observers may notice that there are 2 or 3 countries that were marked as “visited” in my previous map from 2006, but are not in the current version. The reason: I’m operating from a more strict measure of “been there” for places these days – i.e. I can only claim to have been someplace if I’ve eaten a meal outside of the airport and/or spent the night. The only exception to this is North Korea, because I’m unlikely ever to be able to do the “been there” thing right, so I’m counting my DMZ trip.
